treatment for gum diseaseWhen you’re suffering from gum disease, you need treatment right away to stop the spread of the infection and the damage it will cause. The earlier you undergo the appropriate treatment; the sooner we can begin reversing the damage it has caused while reducing the potential for additional complications. However, depending on your stage of gum disease, you will require specific treatments. James Block Dentistry offers treatment for gum disease that’s specialized for each stage with our periodontal therapy.

Treating Early Stage Gum Disease

The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis, which is a mild infection. With prompt treatment, the infection can be stopped before long term damage occurs. During this stage, you’re likely to have bad breath, bleeding gums, and inflammation of the gums. At this point, the “pocket” depths are less than 4mm and bone loss has yet to begin.

With the proper oral hygiene and a good cleaning from your dentist to remove plaque and tarter build up, the infection can be stopped. In some cases, we will perform scaling and root planing to clean the pockets that have formed in the gum line.

Treating Moderate Periodontal Disease

When left untreated gingivitis will progress to moderate periodontal disease. During this stage, the irritation of the gums intensifies from the infection. Bleeding gums and bad breath will become increasingly present while the pockets increase to as much as 7mm. You may even begin to experience pain at this point.

You will need scaling and root planing to clean the pockets and the roots of the teeth. This will remove the plaque and calculus. In some cases, antibiotics may be needed.

Treating Advanced Periodontitis

Once periodontal disease has reached the most advanced stage of periodontitis, as much as 90 percent of bone loss can occur when left untreated. The gums will be red and swollen and may even begin to ooze pus. Your teeth will likely become painful and even become loose. Your bad breath will intensify as bacteria becomes trapped in the pockets that are now larger than 7mm. If left untreated, tooth and bone loss will occur.

Treatment involves periodontal surgery and periodontal laser therapy to stop the spread of infection. You will likely need antibiotics and we will use soft tissue laser treatment to remove the infection while encouraging new gum tissue growth. Using surgical methods, the pockets will be reduced and we can use regenerative procedures to help restore healthy gums. Depending on the extent of the damage, you may need other restorative procedures, such as tooth extractions, dentures, or dental implants.
