6 month checkupToo often, people put off going to the dentist until after a problem has developed because they don’t understand the importance of a regular 6-month checkup. Just as brushing and flossing are an important part of preventative care, so is your 6 month checkup. At each appointment, we do so much more than just clean the teeth and check your oral hygiene habits. We run a full analysis of your oral health to look for areas of concern. With early detection, we can intervene promptly to reduce the severity of damage, allowing you to maintain healthy teeth longer. If it has been a while since your last visit to the dentist, here’s why you need to schedule an appointment right away.

Importance of 6 Month Checkup

The American Dental Association recommends you visit the dentist every 6 months to maintain healthy teeth and gums. During your checkup, we not only clean the teeth, but offer preventative treatments as well. At your appointment, we will conduct a thorough evaluation of your oral health, including an examination of your head and neck to check for any potential complications, such as oral cancer.

First, the dental hygienist will clean your teeth. This is important because brushing and flossing at home are not enough to ward off tooth decay and gum disease. We will clean the areas you can’t reach with a toothbrush and floss to remove the accumulation of tarter and plaque. If tarter and plaque aren’t removed regularly, it will soften the enamel, causing cavities and increasing your risk for gum disease.

During the examination of your mouth, we will look at the gums to see if any signs of gum disease are present. In addition, we check the health of the teeth and check for any loose teeth. We will look for evidence of tooth decay and signs of broken or weak teeth. If you’ve had prior work done to your teeth, such as fillings and crowns, we will check to make sure they are working as intended.

We will also check your tongue and bite to identify any areas of concerns. Using visual and technological scans, such as x-rays, we will have a deep insight into the health of your teeth, gums, and supporting structures. We will examine your face, neck, and lymph nodes to look for complications, such as oral cancer. We will also check the lower jaw joints to address the potential for TMJ disorders or bite concerns.

After your examination, we will determine if any restorative procedures are necessary and discuss treatment options. To prevent additional damage, we will use preventative services to help protect your teeth, such as fluoride treatments and dental sealants.
