Smiling woman in the dental chair. For some people, going to the dentist feels uncomfortable and even scary. Dental fear or anxiety affects millions of Americans so if you feel this way, you are not alone. Unfortunately, anxiety can keep patients away from the dentist and much needed dental care. The good news is that your dentist in Fremont has some ideas to help you feel more at ease during your next appointment.

Open Communication

Being up front with your dentist about your feelings will help them to better serve you in the dental chair. The staff can help put you at ease by explaining each part of the procedure so you feel comfortable every step of the way. Open communication also gives your dentist the opportunity to discuss options like dental sedation with you.

Dental Sedation

Sedation can be helpful for patients no matter what their level of fear is. Nitrous oxide is an excellent option for taking the edge off and helping you feel relaxed during your procedure. Because it leaves your system quickly, it is safe for you to resume your normal activities after treatment with nitrous oxide.

Oral conscious sedation is a deeper level of sedation administered through a pill taken 1 hour prior to your appointment. Due to the nature of the medication, you may feel as if you are asleep, and you’ll need to arrange for transportation after your procedure.

IV sedation delivers medication intravenously for a very deep level of sedation that works well for patients with special needs; bad gag reflexes, or multiple complex procedures to be completed at one time.

Many dentists have televisions in their treatment rooms to help distract patients during the procedures they’re having. If you are having an extensive procedure done, ask your dentist to turn on your favorite program to help pass the time.

Bring your favorite music and headphones along to your dental appointment to help you feel relaxed. Not only is your music choice calming for you, wearing headphones or ear buds will help drown out the noises of the dental office that many people find stressful.

Your dentist wants you to have a pleasant experience every time you visit. Be sure to let them know if there is something they can do to make your appointment more comfortable.
