Sleep Apnea Treatment with MicrO2
If you've received a positive diagnosis for obstructive sleep apnea, then treatment becomes imperative—not only so you can once again sleep well at night and feel rested and awake during the day, but also so you can avoid overall health risks that are linked to sleep apnea, including hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stroke.
Sleep Apnea Treatment Options
- MicrO2 oral appliance: Dr. Block recommends the MicrO2 oral appliance by MicroDental Laboratories. The FDA-approved device is CAD/CAM milled for a precision fit that is both comfortable and effective. This appliance works by moderately shifting the lower jaw forward, thereby widening the airway behind the tongue. With this airway opened for unobstructed breathing, you are more likely to sleep better. And your sleep partner will rest better, too, because you won’t be snoring—a common symptom of obstructive sleep apnea.
- CPAP Machine (continuous positive airway pressure): Uses a small machine to force oxygen into the air passageway that is accompanied by a facemask or nose piece and a hose. For many patients, this is not a practical solution—it’s bulky, noisy and not transportable, which is why Dr. Block prefers to prescribe the MicrO2 oral appliance.
The MicrO2 does not require patients to manage any mechanical adjustments, such as turning screws, or changing positions with elastic bands as with some other oral appliances intended to treat sleep apnea. Instead, the MicrO2 consists of one pair of appliances set to prescription for the upper and lower arches, and another pair set at an advanced setting. Thus, advancements are made by simply removing the current upper or lower arch device and inserting the next advancement device in the MicrO2 series.
